Best places to eat Sleights North Yorkshire

Dating back to 1821, The Piggery is a darling stone cottage tucked away in the pretty village of Sleights, just a few miles from Whitby. Stepping inside The Piggery is like being hugged by an old friend. This gorgeous luxury cottage near Whitby is super cute inside; decorated in Farrow & Ball colours & Cole & Son Wallpaper with many original features, it strikes just the right balance between sweet and stylish. The warm and welcoming sitting room has a lovely open fire, comfy furniture and stunning views of the North York Moors countryside from the French doors. It is sheer romance to sit here with a cup of Yorkshire tea and watch the steam trains puffing along from Whitby to Pickering far below…

For your entertainment The Piggery comes equipped with a SMART TV, a Bu-Ray DVD player, Blue Tooth Speakers, an Ipad for your use, an Ipod dock and lots of games, books and DVDs – plenty to keep everyone busy!

The well-equipped kitchen and pretty dining area enjoy the same magical views through patio doors; throw them open and enjoy breakfast with only the sound of birdsong for company. The kitchen features a solid granite work-top and is stocked with the finest Wedgewood crockery and crystal glassware. And if you fancy rustling up a hearty Yorkshire stew you’ll love finding Le Crusuet dishes in the cupboards. And if you haven’t had time to make it to the shops yet the honesty bar and fresh goodies on arrival will be a welcome sight!

There is also handy cloakroom downstairs which houses a washer and tumble dryer, sink and WC.

All of the three bedrooms in The Piggery are en suite, have king-size beds with pocket sprung mattresses and are dressed in 600 thread count cotton bed-linen. They also boast flat screen SMART TVs, perfect if you want to catch up on a bit of morning TV in bed. The first of which is housed on the ground floor – great for older guests or those with reduced mobility. En suite facilities include a Spa bath and a large walk-in shower with shower chair.

On the first floor of this luxury cottage near Whitby you’ll find the two additional king-sized bedrooms, both including a shower and WC. Complimentary Elemis toiletries are also provided for you. You’ll also find fluffy white bath sheets and hand towels.

The front of the cottage has a charming patio area, great for soaking up the morning sun. The star of the show however is to the rear of The Piggery. There is a fabulous balcony from which to gaze at the stunning scenery below and there’s also a private garden to relax in. A BBQ and outdoor furniture are included and there are few finer spots to enjoy an al fresco lunch.

Local Area

The location of The Piggery is fantastic. Perched on the hillside of the beautiful Esk Valley in the village of Sleights, you can be hopping on a steam train at Grosmont or feeling the sand between your toes on Whitby’s beach within minutes.

Sleights itself is a peaceful little place with a scattering of shops and places to eat. Just along the road from the cottage you’ll find a traditional and welcoming village pub with cask ales, hearty local food and a log fire to keep you warm and toasty in the colder months. And if you decide to eat in you can pick up some excellent local produce from the bespoke butcher and Deli in the village, Radfords. If you are enjoying this luxury cottage near Whitby with children there is also a lovely children’s park a short walk away.

A few miles east from the cottage takes you to the stunning North Yorkshire coastline, a heady mix of rugged cliff tops, peaceful bays and pretty fishing villages. With long sandy beaches and all the traditional seaside trimmings of yesteryear, this is proper bucket ‘n spade territory. That’s not to say it’s stuck in the past, in fact the coast’s villages and towns combine the traditional with the contemporary effortlessly, with trinket shops and tea rooms sitting alongside upmarket champagne and oyster bars.

Although you could happily spend the weekend mooching about the independent shops, bars and cafes along Whitby’s bustling medieval streets, it’s well worth striking out to sample some of the other coastal villages nearby. Robin Hood’s Bay is one of the most popular coastal locations in Yorkshire, or the UK for that matter. The village is a maze of cobbled streets and higgledy piggledy houses which seem to tumble down towards the sea. Sandsend, Staithes and Runswick Bay are also all within easy driving distance, each with their own unique charm.

Head west from the cottage and you can be in the heart of the North York Moors within minutes. Take a tour of the impossibly pretty towns and villages in the area, Egton, Danby, Castleton, Rosedale…Or head up on the high moorland of Castleton Rigg, we guarantee on a clear day it will take your breath away. Suffice to say this area is a walker’s paradise and many suggested routes are provided for you in the cottage.
